Continuing what has become an established tradition, The Bourne Conservation Group took part in the annual Heritage Open Days Programme. For this year the theme was “Architecture” both human and natural and the group offered two events. Firstly, a guided walk jointly led by Noel, Richard and Myung-Hye looking at a variety of buildings of architectural and historic interest as well as natural structures in the area.

(The picture on the right shows Mavins House /Mavins End built by Harold Falkner in 1927.) The second event was a talk in the Maltings by Noel titled ‘The architecture of South Farnham provided by people and animals’. Starting with the pre-historic dwellings in the area, Noel took the audience through the subsequent development of the area including the late nineteenth / early twentieth century building boom arising from the growing population of Farnham. Having spoken of human building activities he went on to describe ways in which modern buildings could help support wildlife, for example by the use of Swift Bricks. To end he shared the wonder of animal architecture as illustrated by ant mounds, Badger setts, otter holts and beaver dams.
Both events were well attended
